A THREAT
TO NATION BUILDING
The youth constitutes a majority of
Kenyans in our beloved nation. For our vast creativity and energy, a
significant number provide manpower for the nation. Though joblessness is a
major problem, few leaders (if any), show fervent interest and will to deal
with the issue. And as the saying goes, ‘an idle mind is the devil’s workshop’,
some youth are tempted to engage into crime and violence. They later try to
find solace in hard drugs and substance use.
The habit dates back when they
first experimented on home branded, soft paper cigarettes. After maturing, the
habit fades from their minds only to be retrieved when they face the real
drugs.
Now this marks the ‘secondary
experiment’ which is mostly followed by addiction after a habitual use of the
drugs.
Studies approve that alcohol and
cigarettes are the most abused. With only weeks after the ‘Toa Sauti’ campaign
kicked off, bizarre cases of road accidents are being reported. In a recent
case, nine matatu occupants died.
Reports claim that in most cases the drivers are to blame. A number of them
fail to get designated drivers and thus drive while drunk. When it gets late
others chew khat on the road, possibly to keep them alert.
In every financial year, the price
of alcohol steadily rises as the government tries to collect more tax for
development programs. Regardless of that though, the bottle-lovers still quench
for more beer. On a critical note, that move by the government ‘boosts’ the
brewing of local beer in our villages. A number of the chang’aa lovers do confess that they can’t afford legal types of
beer due to the high prices. So they only reside to the money friendly liquor.
At approximately Ksh30 they get
drunk and start their incoherent chants back home at dusk from their day-long
drinking spree. In most cases, family conflicts materialize at such points; the
husbands having drunk all their money instead of eking the little they get for
proper spending.
The NEW YOU initiative understands
the vast upshots of drug dependence such as;
· Fighting
and violence in and outside the home.
· Financial
crisis.
· Trouble
at school.
· Trouble
at work and loosing of jobs.
· Troubled
relationships.
· Child
abuse and neglect.
· Road
carnages.
· Arrests and jail.
It’s of great importance to note
that drugs don’t just hurt the person taking them. Everyone connected to the
person can get hurt:
Ø Husbands,
wives, boyfriends, girlfriends.
Ø Teens
and children.
Ø Babies.
Ø Other
family members and friends.
Every Kenyan ought to see the light
and assist in prevention of drug abuse. Only then would our youth maximize
their manpower for national development and healthy living. The lifespan of the
endangered male-child could ascend as well. Notwithstanding, the money set
aside for supporting and putting up rehabilitation facilities could be used to
boost our parastatals for great returns instead. Everyone should play his/ her
part, it’s a collective role. If you are using drugs, turn away from the;
